Flagstaff employment has been predominantly service based, with many jobs tied to tourism, retail, and public service. Flagstaff works to increase all basic-sector industries. However, Information Technology, Bioindustry and Environmental Technology have taken off and fit in nicely with Flagstaff's quality-of-life. The Bioindustry is a perfect example. Northern Arizona University (NAU) is one of the fastest growing research universities in the United States. The 1999 Milken Institute report, a technology-growth study, identified Flagstaff as one of the hottest areas for high-tech and Bioindustry by concentration. This report also named Flagstaff as the #1 place for 'Medical Instruments and Supplies Real Output'. Flagstaff is home to W.L. Gore's highly successful medical device research and manufacturing facilities employing over 1200 people.
Some of Flagstaff's other top employers include Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff Unified School District, Ralston Purina, Flagstaff Medical Center, Sturner and Klein, Wisconsin Tissue and Walgreens Distribution. Flagstaff's relaxed culture, casual dress, low cost of living, abundance of natural and cultural attractions all contribute to make Flagstaff an ideal place to work and live.
